Google Buzz

What is Google Analytics is probably a question every website, or blog owner, should find the answer to. Just for the record, GA started with “Urchin On Demand” from Urchin Software, and was purchased by Google in 2005. GA is a free service; Urchin on demand is still available for a fee.

To start, everyone with a site of their own will benefit by using this free service. Some of the most basic information available is to understand who your visitors are, and where they are coming from. This data-gathering will start from the time you add the code to your website.

Now, this is not to say you will have the identities of who is visiting your site, but the number of visits you are receiving, and for any given time. You can also compare time frames to determine if you have certain times when you receive most of your visitors. You need to find out if blog posts, forum participation, or paid advertising is paying off for you. Testing can be made to work for you with this service.

The number of visitors coming to your site will be broken down in three categories. One is how many are being sent by Direct Traffic. The other will be the other sites that are linked to yours, or Referring Sites, and which is sent by the Search Engines. This is good to know so you can find out those things that are working for you.

If you are involved in affiliate marketing, have AdSense blocks, or doing other things to make money, you need to know what efforts are giving you a return on your time and, or money. You can break these statistics down even further to find specific details.

What is Google Analytics is a relatively easy answer. However, to fully appreciate what valuable information it provides will require some time to understand and appreciate. This will come as you use it more often and understand who makes up your market. Set up your account to get started. You will learn more about what it can do to help you make money at your own pace.
