Knowing how search engines work is the first step to Search Engine Optimization, as you cannot optimize something you do not understand. Knowing the process and what they are looking for will help you and your SEO Consultant better utilize your website in order to attract the web crawlers as well as searchers. Understanding the steps a search engine takes to bring your website to searchers will help you adjust your website so you can get optimal results with your ranking.

The first of these steps are the web crawlers or spiders, or for Google googlebot. These programs search the entire internet by following links. They basically jump from page to page and index everything that they see. As there are billions of web pages up at any given time, a web crawler cannot regularly visit the page to review any changes made to it, they pass by only once every one or two months. So, although it’s very important to keep your webpage updated, do not get upset if you don’t see the updates of your webpage affect your ranking right away.

It’s also very important to be aware of what web crawlers or spiders see on your website and are able to index. This is vital to your ranking. Primarily, the main thing that they see is content, or text. This means make sure that your website is full of useful information that has relevant keywords to help the crawlers index it better. Other things that web crawlers see are metatags and links, so have plenty of those, of course, with useful keywords. Keep in mind that crawlers cannot see flash movies, music, java scripts, images, and frames.

Indexing is another important step to the process. This is basically the information picked up by web crawlers as they jump from page to page. The data they read is collected and organized into huge databases for later retrieval. They index by identifying the major keywords, metatags, and links and then use them to organize the information. This is where good search engine optimization comes in handy as if you don’t have properly input keywords, links, and metatags a web crawler cannot identify and classify your web page for indexing.

So, how do search engines get all that information to come up when an inquiry is made? When a request is made by a searcher into a search engine it’s processed. They words used are passed through the search engines database of indexes. Since most searches bring up millions of pages it then organizes all of the processed information and calculates it by reverence depending on the algorithm of the search engine itself.

An algorithm is basically the calculation process in order to organize indexes pulled up by a searcher in order by reverence. Each search engine has their own algorithm, hence why each search engine pulls up different websites when you plug in a search. The algorithms are based on different orders of importance depending on the search engine, some of the algorithms used are calculations based on keyword density, incoming and outgoing links, as well as metatags. Some search engines use all of these and more, while others base their searches on less. Also, many search engines change their algorithms regularly, which means you must keep up to date on these changes and update your website as necessary.

The final step to a search in a search engine is when searchers see the final result, called retrieval. This is when the web crawlers have indexed all of the information in the databases, and the information has been processed and calculated using that specific search engines algorithm. This is when the searcher sees the results of their inquiry in order by reverence.

So, before starting your Search Engine Optimization, know what a search engine really is and the steps it takes to bring up the information to your screen. Knowing what web crawlers see will help you in organizing the information necessary to create a successful website. Having an SEO Consultant will be of great help to improve your websites rankings and get more searchers traffic.
