Almost everyone has tried to figure out a way to make extra money. Whether you are a Wall Street trader or a disabled war veteran – you probably are on the lookout for some extra cash, no matter what.

It might take a few tries before you find the perfect way to do it. Even big companies fail because they didn’t plan well enough, markets change, or economies tumble. The beauty about working for yourself is you don’t need to deal with many of these factors. If one idea doesn’t work, you can be doing something different the next day.

Even in a bad economy there is money to be had. Part time, full time, or even occasional work and opportunities are all over the place if you just look. Whether you want to babysit at night or start a full time accounting business – or both! – all you need to do is understand what your competitors are doing, and go from there.

Are you a stay at home mom who could care for another baby for a working mom? Get the word out – set up a simple website, make some business cards, and have friends tell friends. Make sure you are cheaper than your competition and offer more.

Can you do yard work? Do you have your own lawn mower? Great! Find out what everyone else is charging, beat their prices, throw in some freebies, hand out flyers and coupons. And again, get a free website that has pictures of your work on it.

One mistake many people make is to rely only on one source of income. Try to fit in two or more ways to make extra money. Babysit, make jewelry and offer to do some accounting for a local doctor or attorney. If one area is hampered by the economy or even the weather, you’ll have others to rely on.
